Can You Get Genital Herpes From Cold Sores?

Symptoms are commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters. But just as HSV-1 can infect the genitals and cause genital herpes, HSV-2 can pass from one person’s genitals to another person’s mouth, resulting in oral herpes. HSV-2 cannot survive long on a non-living surface, so there is no real risk of getting it from a toilet seat or hot tub, for example. HSV-2 can also infect the mouth, although it mainly causes genital herpes. But if you have any symptoms of a primary HSV infection or cold sores for the first time when you are pregnant, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy, you should see your GP or obstetrician for advice. There is no treatment that can get rid of the herpes virus from your body. People with a weak immune system can get a herpes infection more easily. After a few days, painful sores, blisters, or ulcers may develop where the virus entered the body. The only way to know if you have genital herpes is by a medical exam.
